Schematic representation of bone structure. Osteoblasts derive from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and their main function is bone formation. Osteocytes, the most numerous type of cells in the bone, arise from osteoblasts and function in response to mechanical stress and regulation of local and systemic mineral homeostasis.
