The figure illustrates the maximum surface temperature during laser heating and cooling. Time, t = 0 is set at stimulus onset. The figure depicts the mean experimental data compared to the modeled based on a finite element model (FEM). The experimental data are depicted as mean values (Exp. data) of the experimental data. A) glabrous skin, 1 W, 0.6 s, 0.6 J/cm2 B) hairy skin, 1 W, 0.6 s, 0.6 J/cm2 C) glabrous skin, 5 W, 0.12 s, 0.6 J/cm2 D) hairy skin, 5 W, 0.12 s 0.6 J/cm2. The increase in surface temperature was larger in glabrous skin than in hairy skin. The maximum temperature change reached was approximately doubled when using a 5 W power setting instead of 1 W (A & B vs. C & D).
