Schematic of photochemical tissue bonding on small intestine submucosa (SIS). a The adhesive device is placed underneath the bisected SIS and is laser-irradiated through the transparent SIS. b At the tissue interface, the laser is absorbed by rose bengal generating singlet oxygen, which in turn facilitates the crosslinking of tissue collagen and chitosan via amino groups. c The photochemical tissue bonding results in a strong repair that reconnects the bisected sections of SIS
