Temporal development of the critical volume for 200 mW hot spot power loss for various distances between the hot spot and a planar heat sink simulating blood flow. The maximum critical volume depends on the distance between the hot spot and the heat sink simulating the blood flow inside a large vessel. For a very short distance of only a few cell layers, the critical volume nevertheless reaches more than 1 mm3. Increasing the distance strongly increases the critical volume. The four graphs show the fast buildup of the critical volume within a few seconds.
