Circulating ionic currents modelled in the mouse lens. 3D vector maps of circulating ionic currents calculated from the model for the extracellular (A, C, E) and intracellular (B, D, F) space for Na+ (A, B), Cl- (C, D) and K+ (E, F). Extracellular Na+ fluxes seemed to be largest of the ionic fluxes with a maximum located around the polar regions of the model. The intracellular fluxes on the hand were outwardly and equatorially oriented. Extra and intracellular Cl- fluxes appeared to follow the same path into the lens with close magnitudes to Na+ fluxes in the same compartment. The K+ extracellular fluxes seemed to be negligible compared to other ions, while intracellular values were the largest and highly concentrated around the equatorial region of the model. The numbers on the colour-bar are in (mMol/cm2.s) units.
