Schematics of the numerical tests simulating the confined compression experiments by Eisenberg and Grodzinsky [14]. The cartilage specimen was compressed in a rigid, impermeable chamber. The displacement δ(t) and the NaCl concentration of the bathing solution c(t) were controlled, while the reaction force, F(t), was measured in the physical experiments [14] or was predicted in the numerical tests.
